Road Trip To Texas

Well, it's finally here. I'm taking a road trip to the Dallas Ft. Worth area to go to a wedding. I'm planning on hitting some stations in Oklahoma City and the Dallas Metroplex. I got a scanner programmed for my trip and several maps so maybe I can taken in a run or two. More to follow...

Photography... The early years.

I am somewhat of a history buff and thought I would share a little about my beginnings in photography.

It all started in 1985 when I lived in Willmar, Minnesota. As a young boy I would spend a great deal of time going to the fire station. I would visit the station and talk to the maintenance man who took care of the trucks. My parents gave me my first camera, which was one of the old 110 cameras. I had a bike, but many it sure did fly when that siren sounded the alarm of… Continue

April Photography Ideas

April is going to be a research and photography month as I build the Kansas Apparatus Gallery photo album. So far, I have covered part of northeast Kansas including Abilene, Junction City, and Manhattan. I am going to be visiting stations in the Wichita area for photographs this month.

Plans for this summer are being finalized for a visit to Minnesota (Minneapolis, St Paul and possibly Duluth). There will probably be a photo album for this trip when I return.

What is a fire buff?

The term Fire Buff is not defined in Webster's Unabridged Dictionary; however, to the estimated more than 50,000 buffs in the United States, most of whom are freelance and do not belong to any organized group or club, Mr. Karl Detzer comes closest to explaining our avocation when he wrote in the Baltimore Sun as follows:

"Fires to us are not mere spectacles. They are demonstrations of strategy and tactics, for behind the apparent confusion at any 'working fire', there is generalship.… Continue

4/14/09 - Photography at 2-alarm fire in Wichita

I got off from work at the Wichita Police Department at 10:30 p.m. and when I returned home I was informed about a 2-alarm fire in the center city section of Wichita. I changed out of my uniform, grabbed my camera, and drove 30 minutes into downtown Wichita. When I arrived, crews were battling a 2-alarm fire in a two story brick structure about 50 x 150. Heavy fire in the cockloft and 2nd floor. Crews were defensive. Two tower ladders were in operation on the "A" side and multiple hand and… Continue

Aaron,

Thanks for the kind comments about CFDHistory.com, I am just one of many contributors to the site. The site was designed and owned by an Active CFD Firefighter and just recently he has given me administrator rights to be able to add content to the site. I have been involved with Greg and his Youngstown site for a long time. Even though I ride with a Truck Company on Unit 3 on weekends I just have not been catching the fires. It seems most of the working fires are on the west side of the city and since I live in the east by the time I get there the fire is out and they are overhauling. Again thanks for the comments and stay safe!!
