Careless Disposal of a Cigarette Causes 2 Alarm Fire in Cambridge

A resident of 41 Magnolia Avenue in Cambridge tossed a lit cigarette into a trash can resulting in a 2 alarm fire that heavily damaged the 2nd and 3rd floors of a 3 story OMD about 12:15pm this afternoon. Several pets including hamsters and ferrets were rescued by Firefighters. It took about 45 minutes to knock down the fire and 3 Firefighters sustained minor injuries.…

Busy Day Yesterday

I had one of the busiest days in recent memory yesterday starting out with a 3 alarm fire in South Boston that heavily damaged a 2 story apartment building on East 7th Street. The fire came in about 7:30am at the height of rush hour which means stand still traffic in Boston. Following that I responded to a 2 alarm fire in Needham at 52 William Street. Apparently the homeowner stored hot ashes from his fireplace in the garage which… Continue

When Our Photos Upset People, What Do We Do?

This morning I received an email from a person who's friends had a fire in their home a few nights ago in Central Massachusetts. Apparently the homeowners saw the photos on a photographer's website and were upset to "relive" the experience and even more upset that the photos were for sale. I was requested to contact the photographer and ask that the photos be taken down from the site. Obviously I told them I would not and could not but did not stop there.

In the December 09 issue of… Continue

Mormon Church Destroyed in Cambridge

This is just my opinion but I feel covering fires involving places of worship are just as heartwrenching as covering fires that destroy people's homes. Yesterday I covered a fire in Cambridge, MA where the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was destroyed while a service was in progress. Over 300 members of the congregation were able to escape safely as fire alarms sounded during the service. What struck me as inspirational, and I am not an… Continue

Photos can be sources of trauma, but they can also be inspirational. We as observers of photos must choose what we want to observe. The photo of a Firefighter reviving a kitten or a puppy or being hugged by a child after rescuing her goldfish bowl demonstrates the sensitivity for the preservation for all life that motivates every firefighter to answer the call. Unfortunately, the life of a firefighter is not one of polishing their equipment. To hear about a three alarm fire is one thing...to see the inferno is another. Pictures can hurt, but they can also heal.
